Karakachan Dogs also known as Bulgarian Shepherd are an ancient breed of dog prized for their ability to guard and shepherd livestock from even the most formidable predators including bears and their intelligence. Impressive in their size, loyalty, bravery, and intelligence it is hard to match the qualities of this heritage breed. The ability to be fierce and fearless enough to take on wolves and bears, but gentle enough to look after chicks, calves, lambs, and even infants makes the Karakachan a very versatile farm hand.

Windsong Prairie Farms is delighted to aid in the effort to preserve one of the oldest European oldest dog breeds and help you discover why anyone who owns or has ever owned a Karakachan dog will decline to give the Live Stock Guardian position to any other breed on their farm or homestead. Karakachans are less prone to many undesirable behaviors displayed by many popular LGD’s such as constant barking, roaming, and not staying alert to threats. This bolder and braver and bigger breed is far more effective than other common LGD breeds at defending against large predators such as wolves, bears, and large cats. Karakachans are very hard working dogs diligently protecting their flock and forming a very close bond with their herd. They will actively alert to any issues they perceive with any livestock, move the herd away from any predators, and respond to any threat with aggression.

Unfortunately many have never heard of this superior heritage breed, there are fewer than 200 working Karakachan Dogs in the United States and they have only been imported for the last decade making them very rare. We hope that we can help you discover how this superior LGD breed can allow you to have a successful homestead free from predators. We love the wonderful temperaments and strong work instincts that these dogs have, you can enjoy a well socialized and affectionate LGD that still performs their job. While protective and wary of strangers, these dogs would not be considered overtly aggressive however, they will do what they deem necessary if they feel that their flock is being threatened.

All of our dogs come from working parents that we use here on our farm. Puppies will come already desensitized to the smells, sounds, and animals encountered on a farm. Exposed to poultry, sheep, cattle, and equine these little guardians will be ready to imprint on your animals.
